Taste Test: Schnipper's

Sometimes all the leafy greens in the world just won't cut it. That's when I treat myself to a dinner of chicken fingers, fries, and a milk shake from Schnipper's. The 8th Ave. mainstay recently opened a new location in my neck of the woods, and I'm a fan. I might go so far as to say they have the best chocolate milkshake in the city.

Welcome Back, Bueller

Let's be honest. For most of us non-football fanatics, the best part of the Super Bowl is the commercials. Well, that or the buffalo wings. Sure, I'm gearing up to cheer on my new home team, The Giants (even though I'm still a Titans girl at heart), but I think the majority of my excitement comes from the promise of myriad new, big-budget ads. Piquing my interest early is Honda's homage to Ferris Beuller.

I love love love this commercial. Sure, there's no Sloane or Cameron, but I think the concept is a clever bit of nostalgia. Pair this ad with Madonna's half-time show, and Super Bowl XLVI is shaping up to be an '80s love fest.

Sam Edelman for American Eagle

The fashion world is focusing its collective attention on Jason Wu's new feline-inspired designs for Target (and I'm not immune from the madness. Check back for my thoughts on the collection later this week!). But, since Wu's collaboration won't hit stores for a few more days, my eyes are set on Sam Edelman's line for American Eagle.

Sam Edelman is known for classic shapes with intricate design details (spikes, studs, buckles). The AEO collection utilizes the same aesthetic, while toning down drama for the mass market retailer.

Temperatures are still pushing 35 in NYC, but I'm already coveting those flat sandals and espadrilles. In fact, if I had the $$, I'd pick up all three styles pictured above!

Such a happy song from one of my favorite bands. It's the perfect wake up tune.

"Safe & Sound"--Taylor Swift featuring The Civil Wars

Okay, okay. I'll admit it. I'm officially on the Hunger Games bandwagon. I love the books, and can't wait for the movie to come out. (I'm especially excited about Effie Trinket in McQueen!) So naturally, I am obsessed with Taylor Swift's newest song for the film.

...there's no way I'd pay $58 for one! I saw this fib of a sign at the American Apparel Warehouse Sale yesterday. If you're really interested in a bobble (and I highly recommend them) head over to their site, here. Full-priced bobbles start at $8.99.

If you're still interested in checking out the AA Warehouse Sale, they recently extended it until the end of the month. It's open daily 9 a.m.-9 p.m., and located at 766 Sixth Avenue, between 25th and 26th.

Spotlight on New York: My First Sample Sale

The Sample Sale. Before moving to New York, I had only heard rumors about these Meccas of discounted merchandise. When I heard word of a J.Crew/Madewell event, I figured that would be as good a brand as any to make my sample sale debut.

After work, I headed over to 29th St., where I was greeted by a line two blocks long. It moved quickly, and soon enough, I was fishing my wallet out of my bag and handing over my trench and purse to the coat check.

Inside the one-room warehouse, I found racks and racks of clothes and wall-to-wall people. I was a bit overwhelmed at first, and then noticed the organization. Men's on one side, women's clothes on the other--shoes and accessories in the back. After perusing blazers that we still out of my price range, I found my way to the Madwell selection, and picked up this simple sweater dress for a cool $30. Not bad, right?

The J.Crew sample sale is today until six! Hurray down to 260 Fifth Ave. (between 28th and 29th Sts.)

Sorel Boots Update

New York had a stretch of high temperatures, but it looks like fall is already transitioning into winter. There isn't snow in the forecast quite yet, but I'm ready when the flurries start falling. I finally bit the bullet and went with Sorel's Caribou Boots. They're warm and sturdy and look a bit like moon shoes, but I'm sure I'll be singing their praises come January.

Get Glamoured

I'm an unabashed fan of the vampire craze. I like scary vampires and sparkly vampires, but my favorite blood suckers are the ones from Bon Temps, Louisiana. Like any True Blood addict, I was excited to hear about Tarte's collaboration with the HBO series. The collection has been in the back of my mind since I first saw its genius "Get Glamoured" tag line at this year's FNO, but I hadn't tried any of the products until last night.

The lip stain is a sheer pinky-red--a great shade for a pale-skinned girl like me, and the crayon shape makes it easy to apply. It has a nice minty feeling that isn't too intense, and the color lasts all day without re-applying. I would definitely recommend this stain for all red lip-novices, and at $24 it won't break the bank. Check out the whole collection on tarte.com.

NYC Marathon

This weekend I took a great trip down to Baltimore, but I was sad to miss the New York Marathon. Sure it might be a traffic nightmare, but there's something inspiring about that many people crossing the finish line. Fortunately, New York Times "Abstract Sunday" artist Christopher Niemann provided me with a colorful illustration of the event. He sketched the race as he ran! I can't even imagine finishing the 26.2 miles, much less drawing the event.

Temperatures have barely hit the 60s, and this southern girl is already worried about the New York winter. Tester Tuesday: Yes to Cucumber

When mom told me I needed three servings of veggies a day, I don't think using Yes to Cucumbers is what she had in mind. These non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic wipes claim to remove dirt, sweat, and make up all while naturally exfoliating skin.

Trying these out was like a mini trip to the spa. The towelettes were light and refreshing with a sweet cucumber scent. They left my skin feeling soft, but my waterproof mascara was too much for the sensitive skin formula.

Final verdict? Yes to Cucumbers is ideal for a quick freshen up, and the biodegradable formula is perfect for the eco-conscious beauty buyer, but for heavy duty cleaning, I'm still partial to my Neutrogena makeup remover.

Taste Test: Haute Dog

I'm not sure if hot dogs will ever be considered gourmet cuisine, but the ones from Baltimore's Haute Dog come pretty darn close. The tiny stand alongside Bonjour Bakery & Cafe on Falls Road offers fancy franks with house-made sauces tucked inside skinny loaves of French bread.

Whenever I'm in Charm City I order a Signature dog with tomato and onion jam, bacon and onion marmalade and Dijon mustard, but if you're brave, give the spicy Italian a try. I've heard raves reviews.

Spotlight on Nashville: Moovers and Shakers

This weekend I'm headed back to my hometown of Nashville, TN, and I'm so excited to finally try Moovers and Shakers. Started earlier this summer by two Belmont students, this ice cream parlor on wheels is one of Nashville's newest food trucks, and this week, it's featuring a star-studded menu.

In honor of Country Music Awareness Month, the truck will have a special selection of country-inspired ice cream creations like the Man in Black Cherry (a chocolate float with black cherry topping), the the Achy Breaky Shaky (A chocolate rum extract shake blended with root beer), and the Dixie Stix (a vanilla milkshake with Pixie Stix sugar sprinkled on top).

I'm still deciding whether I want something newfangled like the the Backwoods Barbie (a strawberry float with ginger ale) or simple like The Impala (a traditional chocolate milk shake). Either way, I'll be visiting the truck this weekend.

Jason Wu for Target?

After a series of cryptic clues from the Target Style Twitter account like "the new @TargetStyle designer began sketching the future of fashion at 5 years old" and "Senior year of high school in #Paris? Oui, oui. Our next designer has international influence," the secret's almost out.

While it hasn't been officially confirmed yet, Jason Wu is rumored to be the next designer to collaborate with Target. Known for his whimsicle dresses and menswear-inspired tayloring, Wu will hopefully apply his keen attention to detail to this mass-market diffusion line.

I know I had a few harsh words to say about the Missoni for Target fiasco, but I haven't given up on the super store's designer collaborations. I'll be first in line for Wu.

Tester Tuesday: Fresh Black Tea Perfecting Mask

Longtime Style of a 20 Something readers might remember a feature I used to do called Taste Test Tuesday. Well, I've decided to bring it back, but with a little twist. The newly named "Tester Tuesdays" will focus on more than just food. Each week I'll bring you a post reviewing a new restaurant, recipe, beauty product or store!

First up, a hydrating mask from Fresh.

Fresh Black Tea Perfecting Mask ($85 for 3.4 oz)
Within seconds of applying the thick, whipped mask, I began to feel an intense cooling sensation. I liked that I could instantly feel the product working, but it bordered on uncomfortable. The directions suggest leaving the perfecting mask on for 5-8 minutes; I played it safe and washed it off after 6. Results were immediate. My skin felt soft and smooth. My pores were noticeably smaller, and my skin more luminous. If money is no object, you should definitely try this product. The price is too steep for me to invest in a full-size tub, but I recommend it to anyone looking for an effective hydrating mask.

Rachel Antonoff for Bass

When I was in middle school, we had at least one all-school assembly per week. Sing the alma mater, listen to a speaker about empowering women, take note of a few announcements, and I was out of there. Doesn't sound too awful right? Well...

It wouldn't have been bad at all, except all-school assemblies meant dress uniform days. At my all-girls prep school, the dress uniform consisted of a starchy white button down tucked into my plaid, pleated skirt with a pair of dreaded saddle oxfords.

If only Rachel Antonoff had teamed up with Bass back in the day. I would have loved to sport these sassy floral kicks or maybe even a pair of plaid to ironically match my skirt. Word on the street is her spring collection (did you see her gorgeous presentation set?) for the oxford king has some see-through styles, bright colors, and even a touch of glitter. The middle schooler in me just squeeled with glee.

Guest Post: Autumn Apple Tart

I'm so excited to have a guest post today from fellow blogger and NYU SPI Alum, Caroline Nitz. Caroline runs My Thing of the Day where she posts about fashion, food, and entertainment. After you try this tart, be sure to click over to her site!

Reasons I know that it’s fall: high of 65, leaves crunching under my running shoes, wearing my favorite boots (I’ve missed them!) and finally, apples. Instead of consuming mediocre apples year-round, I usually wait until the autumn months arrive and, quite frankly, go nuts. The harvest from the local Fireside Orchard & Gardens and the handful of trees in my grandparents’ backyard provides more than enough fruit to satisfy my craving. And it’s so worth the wait. Fall in Minnesota is a great time to eat apples. We created the ridiculously tasty Honeycrisp variety back in the 1970s and there are tons of apple orchards around the state where you can pick your own, or just pick up a bag.

Fall also means baking with apples. I love a good apple pie or crisp, but tonight I felt like doing something different. I flipped open Ina Garten’s Barefoot Contessa: Back to Basics and discovered the beautifully simple French Apple Tart recipe. It was delicious. Not too fussy, charmingly rustic and an easy enough recipe that I could manage it, sleepy as I was, on a lazy Sunday evening.

French Apple Tart (slightly modified from Back to Basics)

For the pastry:
2 cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
12 tablespoons (1½ sticks) cold unsalted butter, diced
½ cup ice water

For the apples:
4 Honeycrisp apples, thinly sliced
½ cup sugar
4 tablespoons (½ stick) cold unsalted butter, small-diced
¼ cup fig jam
2 tablespoons water

For the pastry, place the flour, salt, and sugar in the bowl of a food processor fitted with the steel blade. Pulse for a few seconds to combine. Add the butter and pulse until the butter is in small bits the size of peas. Add the ice water down the feed tube and pulse just until the dough starts to come together. Dump onto plastic wrap and press into a disc. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper.

Roll the dough slightly larger than 10 x 14 inches. Using a pizza cutter, trim the edges so they’re straight. Place the dough on the prepared sheet pan and refrigerate while you prepare the apples

Peel the apples and cut them in half through the stem. Remove the stems and cores with a sharp knife. Slice the apples crosswise in ¼-inch-thick slices. Place overlapping slices of apples diagonally down the middle of the tart and continue making diagonal rows on both sides of the first row until the pastry is covered with apple slices.

Sprinkle with the full ½ cup sugar and dot with the butter.

Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until the pastry is browned and the edges of the apples start to brown. Rotate the pan once during cooking. Don’t worry if the apple juices start to burn in the pan. When the tart’s done, heat the fig jam together with the water in a saucepan and brush the apples and the pastry completely with the jam mixture. Loosen the tart with a metal spatula so it doesn’t stick to the paper. Allow to cool but definitely serve warm. Et voila!

New York Fashion Week: The Lake and Stars

I reviewed The Lake & Stars' Spring/Summer 2012 presentation on the DailyCandy Tumblr, but I had to share a few extra photos with Style of a 20 Something readers.

The collection was striking. Inspired by the culture and color palette of Mexico City, design duo Maayan Zilberman and Nikki Dekker created bold, yet feminine lingerie, swimwear, and for the first time, lounge wear. I loved the red and black bikini on the left--it was by far my favorite piece in the collection!

The styling for this show kept with the beachy inspiration. Each girl sported a center part, with hair slicked back into an intricate looped braid. Makeup was kept simple with dewy cheeks and a natural color palette.

The 21st Night of September

I'll admit, the video is a little trippy, but to me, this song screams sorority date function. As it's starting to get colder in the city, I can't help but feel nostalgic for college football tailgates and fraternity parties. Don't get me wrong, I'm loving life in the city, but sometimes I miss WFU.

New York Fashion Week: Erickson Beamon at Milk Studios

How gorgeous was the makeup at Erickson Beamon earlier this week? Designers Karen Erickson and Vicki Beamon transformed Milk Studios into a garden of earthly delights. With Eve's return to Eden as inspiration for their Spring 2012 collection, Erickson Beamon displayed jewelry alongside models-turned-fairies, dancers, a cellist, an opera singer, and a whimsical landscape of flora, fauna, and jewels. Their current line is available in select boutiques and on Net-a-Porter.com.

Missoni for Target

While some people are less-than-pleased with Target's customer service during the Missonipocalypse, I hardly have reason to complain. I set my alarm for 6 a.m. and was able to order exactly what I wanted from the line (the shift dress pictured above). For me, the real test lies in whether I like it once the package arrives at my door. Based on a few reviews of the collection I've seen already, I have high hopes.

That being said--the whole "Missoni for Target launches tomorrow morning" campaign on Twitter really irked me. Go ahead and say you can't release a specific time because you are attempting to avoid a site crash or that you are unsure of when everything will fully be available to purchase. People can handle it. I promise.

Also, I know it's not the capitalist way, but next time please set up quantity limits. Price gougers on eBay are profiting off your company and the poor souls who tried to log on to your website last night only to find nearly everything sold out. And I'm not just talking 1 or 2 inflated auctions. There are over 30,000 search results for "Missoni for Target" on eBay. Do you not take issue with them selling your products for two and three times their retail value? Hardly seems fair.

Just my $0.02.

Fashion's Night Out: DailyCandy and Fresh

As a rookie at this year's Fashion's Night Out, I wanted to fully experience the evening. I trotted from one side of Manhattan to the other, popping into Sephora to meet Kristen Bauer of True Blood fame, scoping out the insanely-long Missoni for Target Pop Up line, and getting my nails done at the Teen Vogue block party.

But my favorite stop of the night was DailyCandy's sweet soiree at Fresh because I got a chance to talk skincare with company co-founder Alina Roytberg.

Alina's secret to a beautiful complexion? Keep it clean.
"Good skin starts with clean skin," she said. "My mother was always on my back saying 'Wash your face,' and it's true. Clean skin is very important."

Her must-have product? The best-selling Soy Face Cleanser.
"I can't do without it. Sometimes I even buy it retail!"

Obsession of the Moment: Baked by Melissa

From a girls night in to a mid-afternoon snack at work, Baked by Melissa has been on my radar several times this week. The bakery's bite-sized cupcakes come in a variety of flavors and are seriously addicting. That "betcha can't eat just one" tag line? It definitely applies to these quarter-sized confections. In my experience, the crowd favorite is red velvet with cream cheese icing, but I can't get enough of the s'mores (chocolate cake with a graham cracker stuffing, chocolate icing and a marshmallow topping). Priced at $1 a piece, these tiny treats are well-within my intern budget.

Totally Craving: Sandra Boynton for Winchell Mountain Coffee

Is there anything better than a large coffee in the morning? I didn't think so until I saw Winchell Mountain's recent collaboration with Sandra Boynton. (I'm sensing a "collaboration" theme for the week!)

This morning I had to get up super early to help with a video shoot for work, and I would have loved nothing more than to have a side of quirky illustrations with my cup of caffeine. Boynton's drawings add a touch of whimsy to your standard morning joe.

"Wine and beer have fun craft labels and coffee is dark and boring, we are changing that," says founder Allen Ricca.

And how fun would these be to give (or get!) as gifts? I'm sure they'd be a much-welcomed housewarming present. Wink-wink!

By now, everyone and their mother has posted the complete Missoni for Target lookbook. I won't bore you with a repeat of all 400 looks, but here are my tops picks from the designer collaboration.

After perusing the sneak peak catalog of images, I'm seriously coveting the collection's accessories. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the clothes, but quality is key. They'll either be a home run or a huge disapointment.

Starting from the top:

Scarves are a Missoni staple, and I have high hopes for the Target versions. These two were my favorites--they'd both look cute paired with a solid peacoat. This southern girl needs to stock up on cold-weather essentials for winter in New York city.

Why aren't more bloggers raving about these pumps? If I can only purchase one thing from the collection, it'd be a pair of these shoes. A unique take on a classic black pump? I couldn't ask for anything more.

Plain and simple, I'm a sucker for floppy hats.

And finally, I'm still trying to cozy up my new apartment, so how cute would this zigzag blanket look tossed over an armchair? I love the bright colors, and I can't quite tell, but it looks reversible!

Obsession of the Moment: Visual.ly

Readers, I think I have a new obsession. No, it's not my apartment (Though my new pad takes a close second--more on that later)--it's Visual.ly, a new website dedicated to infographics (like the one pictured above!). Right now, the website features a library of serious and silly infographics depicting data in visually creative ways like this graphic of America's current state of unemployment or this one about Macs vs PCs. My personal favorite? Visual.ly's Social Media Yearbook.

The best part? The website is currently working on a "lab" where users can enter data to create their own infographics like the one pictured above. Be sure to sign up for their email list for the latest updates. I can't wait for the launch.

Yarn Bombs in Brooklyn

Have y'all heard of yarn bombing? Don't feel bad. I hadn't either until I read this New York Times article a few weeks ago. I didn't think much of it until I literally stumbled upon the crafting-graffiti phenomenon.

Earlier this week, a few friends and I ventured over the river to Brooklyn for a bit of exercise, views of the Manhattan skyline and a sweet treat from the famed Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. Mere steps off the bridge we ran into this yarn bombed bicycle. The crafter in me loved it. So quirky and bright against the boring concrete background!

I've been a fan of MK&A (Mary Kate and Ashley, duh.) since their Michelle Tanner days. I religiously followed their careers from solving any crime by dinnertime to Two of a Kind to Mary Kate's brief stint on Weeds, so I was thrilled to hear about the twins teaming up with Toms Shoes for a collaborative collection.

As I've mentioned before, Toms Shoes is a company that runs on the philosophy one for one: for each pair of shoes sold, a pair is given to a child in need, and this collaboration is no exception to that rule.

Made with cashmere and Italian wool, the collection is currently available for purchase on the Toms website, and prices range from $140-150.

Obsession of the Moment: Angus Dei Design

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of meeting Danjebis Rodrigues of Agnus Dei Designs on the corner of 23rd and Madison. He was in need of directions, and somehow pegged me for a local. I'm still not sure if I pointed him toward his destination, but a quick conversation and his black-on-black business card steered me toward his jewelry company's website.

Rodrigues' designs are the perfect edge to roughen up my classic style. I love his cuffs, especially the Doors of Perception wrap bracelets and the simple Signature Evolution Cuff. And his unique rings would be the perfect contrast to a polished party frock.

I definitely recommend checking out his collection. It's a bit pricey, but his looks are so unique and made of high-quality metals. They're totally worth it.

Last weekend I went to visit my boyfriend in Baltimore, which will henceforth be known as the surface of the sun. It was literally over 100 degrees every day I was there. But Saturday night we managed to escape the heat with a trip to Captain James Crab House for a dozen steamed Maryland crabs, a bowl of coleslaw, a basket of hush puppies and two swiftly melting ice waters.

It was my first experience eating whole crabs, and let me tell you, it was not a pretty sight. At first the hammer was a bit unwieldy, but I eventually got the hang of it and only mashed my thumbs once or twice. A barbaric, labor-intensive project, cracking open the crabs was a struggle, but oh-so worth it when i finally got to the meat inside.

Taste Test Tuesday: The Smith NYC

This past weekend a sorority sister of mine came to visit New York, so a group of us went out for a big dinner at The Smith NYC, a chic east village restaurant.

After perusing the chalkboard style menu, I settled on the grilled shrimp with jalapeno grits. Creamy, with a mild cheese flavor and a hint of spice, the grits were good, almost surprisingly so. They nearly fooled me into thinking I was back below the Mason Dixon line. Set atop the grits were 6 perfectly seasoned shrimp. The dish also included a garnish of marinated vegetables, but those only seemed to take away from the rest of the plate. Most of mine remained untouched.

If you aren't a fan of crustaceans, give the ricotta gnocchi with truffle cream a try. I stole a bite from a friend, and immediately caught a case of order envy.

Overall, I'd recommend The Smith for a special occasion. The food was great and the service quite good. The prices, on the other hand, were a bit steep for an unemployed student.

Inspired by: 23rd Subway Station

The New York subway is not luxurious. While efficient, it's a less-than-glamorous means of transportation. That being said, I love that subway stations have subtle nods of nostalgia in the form of gorgeous, vintage mosaics.

After a quick Google search, I learned the history of these public art pieces. The project was initiated in 1910 by subway art director and engineer Squire Vickers, and has continued into modern day with new designs popping up in recent years. One of the new mosaics happens to be in the station on 23rd near my dorm.

The wind-blown hats pictured above inspired a search for the perfect summer headpiece. I'm normally a fan of the floppy, but these cute cloches and fedoras could easily sway my opinion.

Style of a 20 Something Book Club: The Summer We Read Gatsby

Last week, my class at SPI took a field trip to Three Lives & Company: a local, independent book shop in the West Village. As you can imagine, our crew of English nerds quickly invaded the small shop, pouring over the thousands of colorful covers.

I walked away from the visit with both a new-found appreciation for independent booksellers and The Summer We Read Gatby by Danielle Ganek.

Praised by magazines like O, Vogue, Glamour, People, Real Simple and Marie Claire, The Summer We Read Gatsby is a modern-day homage to one of my favorite novels. I only hope it can live up to my expectations.

Taste Test Tuesday: Friend of a Farmer

Last week, a new friend from SPI and I set off to explore our new, New York neighborhood in search of a good meal. Well, we walked and walked, and then it started raining, but we finally found what we were looking for in the rustic-chic Friend of a Farmer.

An upscale cozy cafe with vintage-inspired decor, Friend of a Farmer brings down-home comfort food to the big city. It's a bit pricey, with most entrees upwards of $15, but it was absolutely worth it after our hour-long trek. After a quick survey of the menu, my friend and I both ordered the fried chicken.

When my meal arrived I was almost overwhelmed by how much food was on my plate. I'd been expecting one piece of meat and was presented with three golden-brown pieces atop a plateful of fries with ketchup and honey dipping sauces.

The chicken was crispy and juicy if ever-so-slightly under seasoned, and the leftovers made a wonderful lunch the next day. Overall, I definitely recommend Friend of a Farmer for dinner--apparently their brunch is quite well-known as well!

Does anyone have any good (cheap) suggestions for restaurants in the Gramercy area? I'm trying to cram as much as I can in the next few weeks!

A Movie Star in the Making

Y'all. I am a movie star.

Ok, that's a gross exaggeration, but this weekend, as my friends and I strolled through Central Park, we were asked to be in a commercial for Oxfam America!

Oxfam is an international non-profit fighting poverty and injustice through partnerships in 98 countries worldwide. An incredible organization, Oxfam promotes education and gender equality, supports local groups working to prevent HIV and AIDS in Africa and administers emergency support to victims of political and natural disasters among many other worthwhile efforts. Obviously, we couldn't turn down the opportunity to help out a great cause and get our 15 minutes of fame in the process. I'm not sure if you can see our faces in the video because we were holding umbrellas and they were shooting from above, but either way, it was a great experience.

Every morning on my commute to SPI, I pass through New York's City Hall Park. Full of public art like this "Splotch 15" sculpture, the park is a huge source of style inspiration. With a wardrobe full of black and gray, I'm not normally one to dress like a rainbow, but I think I could incorporate some brights into my accessories like the ones pictured above.

New York University-Summer Publishing Institute

Well readers, I think it's time for a life update. I'm officially living in New York City, attending New York University's Summer Publishing Program. I've been here less than a week, but this program is so intense, it feels much longer.

We're actually not allowed to blog, tweet or post about what the industry specialists that come to speak have to say, but to give you a general idea, we've already heard from Cindi Leive (Editor in Chief of Glamour), Kristin van Ogtrop (Editor in Chief of Real Simple), Larry Burstein (Publisher of New York Magazine) and James Bennet (Editor in Chief of The Atlantic) among other incredibly informative members of the media industry from companies like Rodale, Zinnio and the Precision Media Group.Yesterday I even got to tour the office of Marie Claire!

I'm learning so much, but it's all very overwhelming, and I haven't gotten to explore the city much at all. Hopefully there will be time for that this weekend! If anyone has suggestions for fun restaurants or low key tourist attractions, I'd love to hear them!

As a certified English nerd, I'm a huge fan of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. I love the drama, the passion, and the timeless love story. Naturally, I'm super excited about the new film version set to come out in 2012. So far, I think the casting is spot on. Fresh-faced Hailee Steinfeld for the leading lady and Gossip Girl's resident bad boy, Ed Westwick, for Juliet's villainous cousin Tybalt.

Now the only question is "Wherefore art thou Romeo?" (I know, I know. I'm a huge nerd.) I'm quite curious to see who they cast. Can they do better than Leo?

Graduation

Ok, I've avoided the subject for long enough. I'm officially a college graduate. One week ago yesterday, I walked across a stage, shook Wake Forest University President Nathan Hatch's hand and received a rolled up piece of yellow paper that explained my diploma would arrive at my house in 30-60 days.

Just like that, my college career was over. The ceremony was bittersweet. Sad, mostly because I don't have a job, but happy because in just over two weeks I'm headed to New York! I won't give away all the details quite yet, but it's all very exciting.

So readers, what advice do you have? About New York, careers in journalism, life as a post-grad? I'm listening!

Taste Test Tuesday: The Grilled Cheeserie

Last Saturday, the Grilled Cheeserie sat in Centennial Park amid guitar-strumming hipsters and deafening cicadas in equal-sized crowds. A staple of Musicians Corner, the large black food truck parked mere feet away from a Ben and Jerry's cart. It was enough to inspire fear in sufferers of lactose intolerance.

But my parents and I weren't there for the music, we weren't there for the ice cream, and we most certainly weren't there for the cicada serenade. We were there to try the cheesey food truck taking Nashville by storm.

Started in November of 2010 by Crystal De Luna-Bogan and her husband Joseph Bogan, the Grilled Cheeserie is a mobile restaurant bringing its customers the best of hand-held comfort food. "I knew I had to do something I loved to make or I'd get sick of it," said chef Luna-Bogan in an interview with The Nashville Scene last fall. "It's really good bread and really good cheese."

She's not just tooting her own horn. These sandwiches are tasty and decadent with a hint of homemade flavor. While there are several "Specialty Melts" ($7), including a clever tuna casserole melt and a traditional Croque Madame, my party and I opted to make our own. I started with a base of sourdough bread and cheddar cheese for $4. Extras like tomatoes and local Benton's bacon brought the total up to $5.50. Add a side of homemade tater tots with a smokey tomato ketchup and a cool IBC root beer, and my meal totaled just over $10.

The sandwich was gooey and rich, a grown-up version of my childhood favorite, but the real stars of the show were the tots. Crispy on the outside, hot and mushy on the inside, these fried potatoes were perfectly seasoned and paired well with the truck's homemade "Tot Sauce."

My parents ordered soup as their side ($2 for a small cup), a tomato bisque infused with smokey-bacon flavor that was perfect for dipping. I might go so far as to say I liked the sides more than the sandwich!

I'm the first to admit that I like American Apparel. I'm a big fan of the company's business practices, and I own several of the brand's most popular styles. However, I most certainly don't appreciate their website's use of full-frontal nudity with absolutely no warning.

I opened americanapparel.com earlier today in anticipation of the brand's newest leather clutches. As I clicked the accessories tab, I was bombarded by a photograph of towels displaying images of naked men, one of whom had his penis fully exposed.

Yes, I'm well-aware of the fact that American Apparel is known for having provocative advertising strategies. Maybe I should have known better, but I think that page should have had a warning or something. What if I had been at school? At work? In front of a child?

Am I being reasonable, or just prudish? Readers, what do you think?

Taste Test: Roasted Asparagus

With a basket of home-grown asparagus and a little inspiration from The New York Times Magazine, my mom and I whipped up an extremely simple, seasonal side dish for dinner last night.

All you need are a handful of asparagus stems, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, Parmesan cheese, one lemon and a pinch of salt and pepper.

1.) Bend the asparagus stalks until they snap near the ends.

2.) Place asparagus in a roasting pan and drizzle with olive oil.

3.) Season liberally with salt and pepper.

3.) Roast in a 450 degree oven until slightly crisped.

4.) Garnish with lemon juice and Parmesan cheese.

Spotlight on Nashville: More than Music City

I rolled into Nashville less-than 24 hours ago, and I've already stumbled upon two gorgeous pieces of art. The first, this stunning Nashville Scene cover photo by Eric England featuring dancers from the Nashville Ballet.

And the second, this playful illustration of Nashville's newest songbird, the cicada. Every 13 years these noisy bugs make an appearance on the Tennessee stage, and Anderson Design Group capitalized on this year's summer-time performance.

Even though I'm just here for a few weeks (more on my future plans later!), I love that Nashville's artsy attitude is still alive and well!

Movie Review: Something Borrowed

With plots of lying, scheming and deception, at first glance Something Borrowed appears more like a moral drama than a romantic comedy. But somehow the quirky charms of Rachel (played by Ginnifer Goodwin) combined with the charismatic cockiness of Darcy (played by Kate Hudson) make the film more How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and less Sophie's Choice.

Sure, the script is filled with rom-com cliches: the homely, intelligent girl falling for a tall, dark handsome hunk who just so happens to be unavailable, a passionate lover's spat in the rain, a campy dance sequence, the list goes on and on. But, that being said, the film is less than cookie-cutter.

Darcy is glamorous, blonde and charismatic, but she's also manipulating, controlling, and in the end, she doesn't get the guy. Rachel, on the other hand, is smart and determined, but she betrays her best friend for a man who's not only strikingly good looking, but also morally-lacking.

While I enjoyed the film, I was bothered by the betrayal of friendship in the script, and it left a sour taste in my mouth. I know the plot's conflict of ethics is a twist on the common-place happy ending, but more often than not, a happily ever after is exactly what I'm looking for in a trip to the movies.

But all criticism aside, John Krasinski's performance as Ethan, the sarcastic yet charming, brutally-honest sidekick carried the film, and let's be honest, he's the real reason I went to see the movie in the first place!

Obsession of the moment: One Day

While procrastinating for my final(!) final exam, I stumbled upon this gem of a movie trailer. Starring two of my favorite actors, Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, One Day looks like the perfect blend of sassy humor and emotional love story, all with a heavy dose of charming British accents.

Unfortunately the full-length film doesn't come out until August, so I'm stuck watching and re-watching the trailer for now. Readers--what movies are you looking forward to?

Review: Caylpso St. Barth for Target

Yesterday I took a much-needed study break to check out Target's latest designer collaboration with Calypso St. Barth. I was pleasantly surprised-- the quality of this line seemed better than other recent Target/designer collaborations (cough go-international dress re-release), but I couldn't bring myself to purchase anything and ultimately walked away empty-handed.

I liked the styles of several dresses, but unfortunately the color palate of this line just wasn't flattering on my fair skin tone. Also, while I will admit that the quality of these pieces is decent (the dresses have linings, and there are intricate details and embroidery on most blouses and swimsuits), the price-point is a bit high. If I'm going to spend $40 on a dress from Target, I have to love it, and nothing in the limited selection of pieces from this clothing line at my local store fit that criteria.

The jewelry and home lines on the other hand, are different stories entirely. I loved the designs for home. The sea glass-inspired tumblers, metallic votive holders and ceramic elephant teapots were all gorgeous, but I wouldn't have a place to put them, so I had to pass. I hope I don't kick myself later!

My choice to leave behind the jewelry designs is a similar story. I thought the gypsy-inspired bangles were fun and the playful mix of leather and metallics was endearing, but in the end, nothing sealed the deal. There's a chance I'll go back for one of these wrap bracelets. They caught my attention and $20 seems like a decent price.

Overall, I thought the collection had some real potential, but nothing worked for me. Readers--have you seen the line? What do you think?

By now, I'm sure y'all have all seen Catherine in her gorgeous Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen gown. I think she looked absolutely stunning, and a bit reminiscent of Grace Kelly's lace wedding dress.

A friend of mine recently participated in a photo shoot with budding photographer Kirstie Jeffrey that explores the pressure college women feel to be perfect, and the toxic results of this quest for perfection. Using Disney's canon of princesses as inspiration for these troubled portraits, Jeffrey created a series of images that are far too close a representation of reality.
